Greetings to our lovely Book Club members,
These are indeed turbulent times: Our lives have become upended by the coronavirus epidemic, our communal life disrupted, and what’s familiar and dear to us has been transformed almost overnight. We’re hunkering down, curtailing our social activities to stop the spread of the virus. And naturally this means that we are cancelling Griffin Bay Book Club this month, and for the foreseeable future. And as you will have no doubt anticipated, Griffin Bay Bookstore has temporarily closed. But we are open for orders on our website, by email, and phone.
During this time, our hunger for books, our desire for the written word’s power to transform, to provide solace and comfort, humor and education, beauty (among other things) is ever more important. The book club’s next three books offer glimpses into other cultures, nature, and adventure, not to mention beautiful writing. They are in order: Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi; Walking the Americas: 1,800 Miles, Eight Countries, and One Incredible Journey from Mexico to Colombia by Levison Wood; and The Overstory by Richard Powers,
If you do not have any of the three, you may order them on our website, by e-mail, or by phone. See our website for instructions: www.griffinbaybook.com You may e-mail your order to: firstname.lastname@example.org or phone: 360-378-5511.
When it’s possible, we’ll meet again to discuss these books. It may be a while, but that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss books in another way. It is my intention to keep e-mails going so that we can share book reviews, make recommendations, keep in touch with one another. We will contact you regularly to recommend books, to solicit your book recommendations as well, and to hear how books—literature and poetry—are helping you while we are all radically changing our daily lives.
If you do not wish to receive these e-mail postings, please let me know and I’ll remove you from the e-mail list. If you would like to join our e-mail list, please let us know at email@example.com
You may also check our website, Facebook, Instagram for our latest updates. You may e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a message on our phone, 360-378-5511. We will check both regularly.
If you joined book club recently, you may like a list of all the books we’ve read over the years. Please let me know, and I’ll get the list to you. You will find a gamut of books to inspire you, amuse, inform, provide you with an escape hatch, and bring you close into the lives of wonderful characters.
I mention this because we’ve read Hilary Mantel’s first two books in her trilogy about Thomas Cromwell. We’ve been eagerly awaiting the third and it’s here now: The Mirror and the Light. If you can’t wait for it to be available in paperback, you can get a copy by ordering it from our website. If you haven’t read the first two—Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies—this is a good time to delve into them - they are both in paperback. You will find a story not so dissimilar to the one we’re in now.
You will find this letter also posted on our website where you will find instructions for placing orders and picking them up. You will also see what we are doing to keep the bookstore—and hence your orders—sanitized.
That’s it for now. I’ll be in touch again soon. In the meantime, I’m thinking of you and all the incredible books we’ve read and discussed together.
We look forward to hearing from you.
All the best,
Griffin Bay Book Club facilitator
PS: Pass the word around: Tell your friends and neighbors, readers you know, island book clubs and other groups that although the store is closed, we are for open for orders.
