On Friday night, February 26, 7:00 pm, Griffin Bay Book Club will discuss Ryszard Kapuscinski's last book, Travels with Herodotus. The Polish reporter was known for being a voracious and intrepid traveler, ferreting out stories, piecing bits of history together with flair and lyricism. Early on in his career he fell in love with the ancient work: Herodotus, The Histories. As he traversed continents, wandering throughout Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, Herodotus proved to be a boon companion, offering contrasts and comparisons to the present, not to mention fascinating glimpses of strange customs and vanished worlds. In Travels with Herodotus, we get to go along too, taking the back roads with two consummate storytellers who give you a portrait of the world as they saw it. This work is a compilation of Kapuscinski's observations, notes, experiences from his long career, beginning with his youthful travels in the 1950s until shortly before his death in 2007. |
